Claude Monet

1840 - 1926

Claude Monet grew up in the seacoast city of LeHavre with a passion for art and the sea. He and Renoir were art students together in Paris where Monet soon became one of the leaders of the Impressionist movement. Against his family's wishes, he married Camille Doncieux, one of his models. She died of cancer at 32, a few months after giving birth to their second son. Monet and his second wife, Alice, raised their combined family of eight children in a style his country neighbors considered odd and "bohemian."
